While growing up in New York’s scenic mid-Hudson Valley, he developed a passion for basketball and weightlifting. In college, he began competing in Olympic weightlifting. After a serious wrist injury that required two surgeries, Dr. Tom spent several frustrating years rehabilitating his wrist. Fortunately, since this occurred during his doctoral studies in Boston, he benefitted from some of the best medical care in the country, cementing his perspective that rehabilitation providers have to appreciate multiple disciplines and have a holistic approach to treatment to achieve optimum results.
Dr. Tom Van Ornum received his Doctor of Physical Therapy and Bachelor of Science in Health Studies degrees from Boston University. He has worked with athletes of all ages, including the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, UFC, performing arts, and military special forces. Before moving to Dallas, he was the founder of his own private practice in the Washington, DC area and has also served as the medical director for Sparta Science, one of the top sport science companies in the world.
Dr. Tom is an expert dry needling provider with the CMTPT certification, which are advanced credentials for dry needling for muscle, joint, and nerve pain. He has also received extensive training in various forms of biomechanical/ movement examinations, joint manipulations, and soft tissue mobilizations. He has multiple articles published in national publications and regularly consults for numerous medical device and digital health companies across the country.
Dr. Tom pulls from a variety of disciplines when treating pain/dysfunction and understands that “everything is connected.” The foundations of his practice integrate a recognition that pain, stress and performance are outputs of the brain and gut and that the overall well-being of a person depends on optimal interactions with the environment. He strives to eliminate pain and maximize multi-dimensional movement in everyone he works with.
